When we choose a candle, we usually look at the scent, the colour or the shape first. But underneath all those details there is something simple that matters far more than we realise: the wax.
That soft, glossy layer that melts as soon as the flame touches it decides how a candle burns, how long it lasts and what kind of feeling it brings into a room. Different types of wax each carry their own kind of light.
Candle wax is the “fuel” of the flame.
While the wick is burning, the wax around it melts, turns liquid and travels up the wick. There it evaporates and is burned. It sounds technical, but in practice you mainly notice this: a candle that burns calmly, doesn’t smoke and melts evenly has found the right match between wick and wax.
There are several types of wax that can do this job, each with its own origin, properties and atmosphere.
More and more candles are made from plant-based waxes. They start as plant oils that are then turned into solid candle wax.
Soy wax
Soy wax is made from soybeans. It is known for its relatively low melting point and a soft, steady flame. It often gives the candle a creamy, slightly matte look. Because soy wax melts slowly, soy candles usually have a longer burn time.
Rapeseed / canola wax
This wax comes from rapeseed oil and is often produced within Europe. That local feel is something many people like. Rapeseed wax also burns quietly and can hold fragrance nicely, without becoming overpowering.
Many people choose plant-based wax because they like the idea of their candle starting in the world of plants. It feels soft, natural and a bit more grounded.
Beeswax has its own story. It appears when bees build wax combs for their honey. The wax that remains after the honey has been harvested is cleaned and refined into candle wax.
Beeswax naturally has a warm, golden tone and sometimes a very subtle honey scent. Candles made from beeswax give off a deep, rich glow, as if the light itself is a little thicker. You often see them in rituals, old traditions and quiet, meditative spaces.
Because beeswax is precious and not available in endless amounts, it is usually a very conscious choice: you are bringing a candle into your home, but also a small piece of cooperation with nature.
Paraffin is probably the most widely used candle wax in the world. It is derived from petroleum and is therefore easy to source and very consistent in quality.
The big advantage of paraffin is how predictable it is: a bright, steady flame, strong light and a smooth surface. It is also very suitable for scented candles, because the fragrance can be released well while the candle burns.
Many candles you see in shops are fully or partly made from paraffin. For a lot of people this feels familiar: it is the light they grew up with.
In reality, brands rarely work with just one type of wax. Instead they use blends. A little of this, a little of that, fine-tuned to what the candle is meant to do.
A brand might combine plant-based waxes with some paraffin to:
To you as the user, it looks simple: you light the wick and enjoy the glow. But behind that peaceful flame there are often many rounds of testing and blending.
You don’t have to be an expert to feel what suits you.
You can ask yourself a few gentle questions:
After a while you’ll notice you develop a preference. Your eyes will recognise the difference in light, your nose in scent, and your body in how the room feels.
With a GlowNote, it’s not only about the hidden engraved ring, but also about the way the candle burns. The wax needs to melt slowly and evenly, so the ring can appear step by step. The light should be warm, the flame steady, the experience calm.
That’s why the choice of wax is made with care. So you don’t have to think about the technical side at all, and can simply watch how the light softens the room while your message slowly rises from the wax.
Whether a candle is made from plant wax, beeswax, paraffin or a blend, in the end it comes down to what you feel when the light goes on. Wax might be “just” one ingredient, but it shapes the whole experience.
Next time you light a candle, you might pause for a moment and look at that small pool of melted wax. It’s more than just fuel. It quietly carries your moment, your scent, your light.
